Lagotti och deras päls © Dorota Gustafsson  dorota@hesiodos.se   Det har skrivits mycket om Lagottopälsar: stora lockar, små lockar, mycket päls, lite päls. Som alla förstår så finns denna variation och den är normal. Det har skrivits en del om hundar som har kala fläckar, och vi kan fråga oss om detta är normalt, eller om dessa hundar är sjuka. Idag kan ingen svara på det. Men det är inte normalt att hunden tappar sin päls.

 

Det finns en variant av päls hos lagotto som inte är så vanlig och som man tyvärr inte hör mycket om, nämligen korthår. Möjligen beror det på att alla uppfödare inte känner till att det förekommer, eller vill man inte tala om det. Vårt syfte, med att i denna artikel visa bilder på korthårslagotto, är att försöka avdramatisera saken, samt informera om att detta förekommer. Ingen uppfödare avlar medvetet på dessa linjer, och föräldrarna till hundar på nedanstående bilder har korrekta pälsar. Även om det inte är ett diskvalificerande fel bör man, med tanke på den stora svenska populationen, inte använda korthårslagotto i avel. Men den är likväl en rasren lagotto, över vilken ägaren förhoppningsvis känner samma glädje och stolthet som över vilken annan hund som helst. Ingen ska behöva känna skam över att ha fött upp, eller vara ägare till en korthårslagotto. Har du funderingar eller synpunkter, är du välkommen att kontakta oss.

Föds det verkligen Lagotto med korthårig päls? Javisst. Det föds kortpälsade Lagotto, också i hemlandet Italien, och jag har sett sådana på bild. Tyvärr spekulerar man hos oss om det är en blandras och så är inte fallet. En troligt orsak till de olika kvalitéerna i pälsar, är den inblandning av andra raser som förekom fram till ungefär 70- talet. Säkert har man i Italien tidigare i aveln använt också hundar med icke korrekt päls , då man i första hand prioriterat hundens förmåga att söka tryffel.

Korthårslagotto. Här ser man tydligt den korta pälsen på framförallt ben och nos.

 

Följande rader har en uppfödare som fått korthår skrivit: När valpen var mellan 5-6 v tycktes pälsen på nosen och stopet "försvinna". Det spred sej upp över huvudet. Pälsen på kroppen förändrades inte alls. Lite senare började även pälsen på benen att "försvinna". Vid 7 v ålder stod det helt klart att valpen var korthår. Pälsen utvecklades helt normalt fram till 5 v ålder. En annan sak som jag la märke till, i takt med att pälsen försvann i ansiktet, var att ögonen började framträda allt mer

 

Om vi tittar i rasstandarden, vad står det om päls där? Helhetsintryck: Lagotto skall vara en liten till medelstor hund, välproportionerlig med robust konstruktion och rustikt utseende. Den skall ha kompakt, ullig och krulligt lockig päls. PÄLS: Pälsen skall vara ullig och forma tjocka, ringformade lockar jämnt över hela kroppen. Underullen skall synas under lockarna. Pälsen på huvudet och kinderna skall vara längre, inte lika hårt krullad, och forma prydliga ögonbryn, mustascher och skägg. Även kinderna är täckta med tjock päls. Pälsen på öronen tenderar att ha lösare lockar, men måste vara mycket vågig och även insidan av öronlappen skall vara pälsbeklädda. Om pälsen inte klipps tenderar den att bilda filtplattor; därför måste en fullständig nerklippning göras minst en gång årligen. Hopfiltad päls och underull skall avlägsnas regelbundet. Pälsstruktur: Pälsstrukturen skall vara ullig, med en något grov struktur på toppälsen som formar lockarna. Pälsen och ullen skall vara vattenavstötande.

The quality of the coat can vary from small to big curls and the thickness of the coat can be more or less. It's plenty of variations and it is normal. Sometimes there has been written about Lagotti with bald spots and it has been discussed if this is normal or if it is symptoms of any disease. It is not confirmed as far as we know. But it is not normal for a dog to lose its coat. .

 

There is a variety of Lagotto coat called shorthaired. It is not very common and people don't talk much about it. The idea with this article is to put light on the shorthaired Lagotto and inform and play down the occurrence of this rare event. Most breeders who has got shorthaired Lagotti has not been aware of the genes that the parents of the shorthaired pups have carried. The parents of the pups on the pictures below have had normal, curly coats. This type of coat is not correct. But no matter what kind of coat the dog has, they are still pure bred Lagotti and every Lagotto owner should be proud and happy of their dog. Are there really born shorthaired Lagotti? Yes, shorthaired Lagotti are born even in Italy and I have seen them in pictures. Here in Sweden there has been brought up for discussion if the shorthaired Lagotti are results of cross breeding. Probably the reason of so varying coat qualities depends on the mixing of a great number of breeds during the rebuilding of the Lagotto. In fact this last right up to the seventies. In Italy there have been much more important aspects to look for in breeding than coat qualities, for example good truffle hunters.

Shorthaired Lagotti.

 

The following report is written by a breeder who has got a shorthaired puppy in a litter of other correct coated pups. Until the puppy was 5 weeks old the coat had developed quite normal. When the puppy was between 5 and 6 weeks old the long hairs in the face seemed to disappear and it spread up to the skull. The coat on the body stayed intact. Later on the long hairs on the legs also began to "disappear". At seven weeks it was an obvious fact that the puppy was shorthaired

 

Let us take a look at the Standard of the Lagotto and what is said about the coat. "General Appearance I.agotto is a medium-small size dog, of coarse appearance, stout and very well-proportioned, with thick and curly hair of woolly texture…." "Coat Woolly-texture hair, never twisted to form thin cords or curls, semi-rough on the surface, with very thicks curls, ring-shaped, with visible undercoat. Curls must be homogeneously distributed throughout the body, barring the head where curls tend to open up. Abundant whiskers, beard and eyebrows. Even the cheeks are covered with thick hair. The covering hair and especially the undercoat are water-repellent. Given that the hair, if not cut, tend to felt, a complete clipping must be performed at least once a year. Felted hair and undercoat must be removed periodically."
